Health & Safety

Essential oils are powerful plant extracts. Used the right way, they’re a lovely part of a calm routine. “Dilution and education are extremely important” is something we say a lot, and this page is why.
Important
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Our products and aromatherapy services are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Our products are cosmetics and aromatherapy products for external and aromatic use only. Information on this website, including our blog, is for general wellness and education and is not medical advice. Always see your doctor for any medical condition or concern.
Using essential oils safely
- Never swallow essential oils. For external and aromatic use only.
- Always dilute blends in a carrier oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond oil) before they touch your skin. Oil and water don’t mix, so in the bath mix oils into a carrier oil first, then into your salts.
- Patch test a small amount on your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using a new product, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
- Keep away from eyes, the inside of the nose and ears, and broken or irritated skin. If oil gets in your eyes, rinse with a carrier oil or milk, then water, and get medical help if irritation continues.
- Check the ingredients on each product page if you have allergies, for example to nuts (some carrier oils) or citrus.
- Citrus oils and sunlight: some citrus oils, like bergamot, can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure on skin where you’ve applied them.
- Stop using any product that causes redness, itching or discomfort.
Pregnancy, nursing, medication and health conditions
If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition such as epilepsy, asthma, high blood pressure or a skin condition, check with your healthcare provider before using essential oil products.
Children
- Keep all products out of reach of children. Some oils smell sweet and can be mistaken for candy.
- Use aromatherapy around children only with an adult in charge, at lower dilutions, for short periods, and never near a child’s face.
- Some oils, such as peppermint, eucalyptus and wintergreen, are not suitable for young children. Check with your pediatrician first, especially for babies and toddlers.
Pets
Many essential oils can be harmful to pets, especially cats and birds. Diffuse only in a well-ventilated room your pet can leave, never apply oils to pets, and keep products where pets can’t reach them. Ask your vet if you’re unsure.
Diffusers
- Follow the instructions that come with your diffuser. Never run it without water, and unplug it before filling or cleaning.
- Diffuse in short sessions (about 30–60 minutes) in a ventilated room, and take breaks.
- Keep the diffuser on a stable, flat surface away from the edge, children and pets.
Storage
- Store products in a cool, dark place, tightly closed. Essential oils are flammable: keep them away from flames and heat.
- Butters and oils are best used within 6–12 months of opening. Stop using any product that smells “off” or has changed.
Aromatherapy sessions
Our sessions are provided by Cristina Melo, a Level 1 certified aromatherapist (New York Institute of Aromatic Studies). Aromatherapy services are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and they don’t replace medical care. They are intended to support overall wellness.
If something goes wrong
If you have a reaction you’re worried about, stop using the product and contact your doctor. For a suspected poisoning (for example, if a child swallows an oil), call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away, or 911 in an emergency. Please also email us at info@keepcalmaromatherapy.com so we can look into it.
